Which HR documents are required by law?

In the early stages of setup, it’s common for firms to overlook the importance of HR documents. But if you don’t pay close attention to legal requirements, you risk putting the brakes on before the engine even revs. At the bare minimum, you’ll need:

  • A written statement of employment particulars (under the Employment Rights Act 1996)

  • Disciplinary and grievance procedures (in accordance with the Acas Code of Practice)

  • An employee handbook with essential company policies – such as equal opportunities, health and safety, and equality and diversity, to name a few.

But that’s just the tip of the iceberg.

  • With our company newly formed, and having only a handful of employees, we simply didn’t know how much HR assistance we would need in its first year. After discussing our circumstances with hoomph, the most sensible and cost-effective approach was to work with them on an ad-hoc project basis to fulfil our needs as a startup — curating handbooks, policies and contracts — and then only if and when required, if anything unusual came up. With the ad-hoc service, Lisa has been highly responsive, and every matter has been dealt with efficiently and professionally.

FAQs

Have another question about HR 101? Reach out to our team.

  • HR managers, department heads, and supervisors are typically responsible for implementing HR policies within their respective teams. They’ll ensure adherence and compliance across the organisation. But that’s not necessarily the case for startups. Approaches to HR are typically more flexible in new ventures, falling on the shoulders of company founders who already have a number of plates to spin. We’re here to alleviate that burden.

  • More than a mere rule book, HR policies provide clarity and structure for managers and employees alike. When they’re well-written, they establish expectations, manage fairness and consistency, and protect the organisation in HR legal issues – safeguarding, regulating, and clarifying the rights and responsibilities of the employer and its employees.

  • If companies don’t clearly write, distribute, and update their policies properly, legal penalties, fines, and lawsuits can be just the tip of the iceberg. Non-compliance can also lead to loss of employee trust, reduced morale, and operational disruptions that hinder business growth. Don’t let complacency jeopardise success.
